Dating forest fellings with radar imagery and AI

Spacemetric is piloting capabilities with Qamcom to improve the Swedish Forest Agency's ability to date final fellings and follow up tree regrowth through enhanced satellite image monitoring. The approach is to complement the routine use of optical satellite data with radar imagery to mitigate data gaps caused by cloud cover and seasonal low-light effects.

The project is financed by the Swedish government’s Advanced Digitisation programme for strategic innovation. Spacemetric is managing the project and is contributing with image data management and processing capabilities. The role of the Forest Agency is to provide requirements, test the solution prototype solution, and provides user feedback. Qamcom is a research and development specialist that will develop machine learning algorithms to analyse the combined optical and radar satellite data.
